Commitment to Trans Inclusivity

The Panhellenic Council is committed to being welcoming and inclusive to all students in our community. The following community expectations and chapter policies have been consolidated to provide greater clarification for any students who are currently affiliated with or interested in joining a Panhellenic sorority.

i. recruitment registration

The Panhellenic Council’s recruitment registration form does not include any questions regarding gender identity or assigned sex. Any individual who wishes to participate in the Panhellenic recruitment process is allowed to. The ability to participate in University of Richmond Panhellenic Recruitment is separate from chapters’ individual membership policies.

ii. safe zone training

The Panhellenic Council’s 2020 Community Expectations stipulate that all six members of Panhellenic Executive Board and (at least) five members of each chapter leadership board must undergo Safe Zone Training. Recommended chapter positions include President, Recruitment, New Member Education, and Standards.

25 Panhellenic leaders attended Safe Zone Training in 2019. See Appendix 1 for more detailed chapter information.

iii. trans advocacy training

The Panhellenic Council’s 2020 Community Expectations stipulate that the primary chapter leadership board members for Recruitment and New Member Education must undergo Trans Advocacy Training.

iv. recruitment counselor curriculum

The Recruitment Counselor training program will include sessions with Common Ground on using gender-inclusive language when talking to and about PNMs and the recruitment process. Recruitment Counselors are to ensure that PNMs of all gender and sexual identities feel welcome to join and grow within our community.

v. pronoun usage

The Panhellenic Council’s 2020 Community Expectations include asking for and respecting the chosen name and pronouns of all students. Chapter rituals often include gendered language in ritual; chapters may need to adhere to those practices in ritual setting.

vi. gender neutral dress codes

The Panhellenic Council’s 2020 Community Expectations include accepting all styles of appropriate dress for chapter events (i.e. recruitment, socials), and welcoming other non-gendered styles (i.e. pants, jumpsuit) to respect how members choose to express themselves.

vii. gender neutral guest policy

The Panhellenic Council’s 2020 Community Expectations include discontinuing the use of heteronormative and other exclusive language when discussing bringing guests to socials or other events.

viii. speaking out against discriminatory language

The Panhellenic Council’s 2020 Community Expectations include speaking up against racist, sexist, transphobic, and all other offensive or discriminatory language or behaviors. This further includes filing bias-related incidents if necessary.

Ix. legal and preferred names

Preferred names can be used on all internal and informal chapter documentation. However, because the University of Richmond is an academic institution and Panhellenic sororities are private membership organizations, your legal name will be required for certain forms.
