Statement on Events of Racism, Injustice and Police Brutality

May 31, 2020

Dear UR and Panhellenic Community,

We cannot truly begin to express how incredibly saddened, frustrated and angered we are by the acts of racism, violence, and injustice happening all over America, today and every day.

UR Panhellenic strives for diversity and inclusivity, and it is our responsibility to stand up against the racism and violence happening around the United States. We cannot call ourselves diverse or inclusive while staying silent. The social injustices happening in front of our eyes demand all of our attention, support, donations, and fight.

We recognize the privilege that members of Panhellenic sororities hold in these times and nearly all contexts in our nation and world. In terms of the Panhellenic community, it is important to acknowledge the historically white, cis-gender, high-income, and high-cost nature of the community, it is easy, knowingly or unknowingly, for Panhellenic to continue to perpetuate racism and prejudice on campus and in our country.

However, we know this is not an excuse and we want to do better each year. These are issues all people on our campus should be considering, and it should be no different within the entirety of the Greek community.  It is evident now, more than ever, the need for Panhellenic sororities to name, recognize, and positively utilize our places of privilege. The ability to confront important issues that may make us uncomfortable will individually and collectively contribute to a compassionate, understanding and embracing UR and global community.

We have linked various resources for you to help and take action in our bio and BLM highlight. Also, look out for more ways to participate on our Instagram in the coming week as we organize our community to contribute further. Please take action and be thoughtful, caring allies and advocates, now and always.
