Key Terms

PNM: Potential New Member; any woman that is eligible to participate in recruitment, regardless of her class year or intent to join. 

New Member: A woman who has accepted a bid to join a sorority but is not yet an initiated member.

Bid: A formal invitation to join a sorority.

Chapter: A membership unit of a sorority.

Rho Gamma: A disaffiliated sorority woman who serves as an unbiased recruitment counselor to guide PNMs through the recruitment process. You will received a Rho Gamma in November.

Dues: The cost of joining a sorority which are paid to chapters to cover operations, events, and activities. 

NPHC: The National Pan-Hellenic Council; this is comprised of nine historically African-American fraternities and sororities. We have two NPHC sororities at University of Richmond, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. 

PPC: Positive Panhellenic Contact; guidelines for how sorority members should interact with PNMs to create an inclusive, friendly environment without creating pressure to join a specific sorority or a sorority in general.

Cottage: Each sorority has a space on our campus located in cottage court. The are not live-in spaces and are use for chapter events and hanging out!

Big/Little: All sororities have systems called "Bigs and Littles" which are women paired between the newest member class and the older members. The idea is that this woman can act as your "Big Sister" at your home away from home.

Legacy: A PNM whose relative is an initiated member of a sorority.

Recommendation: A letter or form completed by an alumna member of a sorority showing support for a PNM's membership. At the University of Richmond, recommendation letters are not needed.
